Boston Religious Leaders Demand $15 Billion Reparations from City and ‘White Churches’

Religious leaders in Boston demand over $15 billion in reparations from both the city and “white churches” for the black community, following an official apology from Mayor Michelle Wu for the city’s role in the Atlantic slave trade.

Activists, including Reverend Kevin Peterson, urge white churches to support the movement. The proposed sum includes $5 billion for cash payouts, $5 billion for financial institution strengthening, and $5 billion for addressing educational disparities.

Churches like King’s Chapel and Trinity Church are targeted for their historical involvement in slavery. The City established a Task Force on Reparations in 2022 to explore avenues for delivering reparations to black residents.
