Tennessee Legislature Passes Bill Mandating Gun Safety Education in Schools

Both chambers of Tennessee’s state legislature have approved a bill that, if signed by Governor Bill Lee, will require public schools to offer age-appropriate gun safety courses starting from the 2025-2026 school year.

HB 2882, supported by Republican lawmakers, aims to educate students on safe firearm handling, accident prevention, and proper reporting procedures if they encounter a firearm.

The curriculum will be neutral on political topics and will not involve live ammunition.

Despite criticisms from some, proponents like Rep. Chris Todd believe the bill will enhance firearm safety awareness among young people, potentially reducing firearm-related accidents and injuries.
